FOOTBALL SAFETY


NATIONAL COACHES REQUIREMENTS


  • President/Commissioner completes a brief online application to register the organization with Heads Up Football℠.
  • Within the application, each local Pop Warner association must nominate a Player Safety Coach (PSC).
  • All Pop Warner coaches (head and assistants) must register for USA Football Coach Membership. 
  • All Pop Warner coaches (head and assistants) must complete the USA Football Level 1 Coach Certification Course annually
  • New coaches take the full USA Football Level 1 Course and previously certified coaches take the Re-certification Quiz.

What certifications do Upland Pop Warner Coaching Staff have? 

Tackle Football Coaches (Head Coach and Assistant Coaches)

Each year every Tackle Football Coach (head coach and assistant coaches) at Upland Pop Warner must complete a  USA Heads Up Tackle Football for youth Certification. Each Coach is educated by the USA Football staff on proper blocking, shoulder blocking and tackling, proper equipment fitting, encompasses student-athlete first aid protocols such as Heat Illness Prevention and Cardiac Arrest.  Coaches learn skill development and educate Coaches of the importance of proper Concussion recogintion and management during pop warner practices and games. The Coaches learn the impact of sports-relate concussions on athletes, teaches how to recognize a suspected concussion and provides protocols to manage a suspected concussion with steps to help players return to play safely after a concussion. The Coaches learn aout Heat Illless Prevention for Extertional heat stroke is the leading cause of preventable death in youth sports players. Each Coach is educated and given critical information to minimize the risk of exterional heat stroke, seven fundaments to minimize heat relate illnesses. Coaches will learn and recognize the warning signs and sysmptoms of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. One staff member must be CPR and First Aid certified. Coaches are provided an overview of first aid and best practices for any first aid situations. Each year, coaches go through a Mt Baldy approved Clinic and the Glaziers Clinics to better their coaching skills. 

Flag Football Coaches (Head Coach and Assistant Coaches)

Each Flag Coach must complete a USA Heads Up Flag Certification. The Coaches update their basic flag skills, how to property teach flag techiques to our players and flag health and safety updates. Each Coach is educated by the USA Football staff on proper blocking, shoulder blocking and tackling, proper equipment fitting, encompasses student-athlete first aid protocols such as Heat Illness Prevention and Cardiac Arrest. 
The Coaches learn the fundamentals of coaching, teaching many of the key fundamentals of the game and is provided a unique student-cerntered curriculum for interscholastic coaches. The training enhances both the Coaches knowledge and teaching skill to prepare to help guide each player on the team to a safe, fun and rewarding experience. Each Coach is enriched their learning experience with training in preparing for practice, warm ups, offense, quarterback skills, receiver skills passing tree and defense. Coaches are trained in creating a healthy and age-appropriate athletic experience that supports the educational mission of all youth sports. Coaches learn a number of drills they can use in practice with their team to improve their flag football skills. One staff member must be CPR and First Aid certified. Coaches are provided an overview of first aid and best practices for any first aid situations. Each year, coaches go through a Mt Baldy approved Clinic and the Glaziers Clinics to better their coaching skills. 

Cheer Coaches and Cheer Coordinator

Each year Cheer Coordinators and Coaching staff go to training designed just for Pop Warner coaching staff. The objective of the course is to both motivate and educate. All aspects of coaching youth athletes will be didcussed- everythig from dreaded paperwork to exciting championship preparation. Coaches learn Progression of Training Courses and Retention of Your Youth Athletes. During the cheerleading training program, coaches will focus on how to go about teaching many of the key fundamentals of cheerleading, enhance their knowledge and teaching skills to help guide the cheerleaders in a safe enviornment, fun and rewarding experience. 

During the enrich training, coaches are provided with the most effective and exciting ways to learn. Cheer Coaches learn the fundamentals of warm ups, arm and leg movements, formations, cheering, jumps, tumbling, roundoffs, stunting, teaching life skills, dance routines and the most important, cheer safety.  One staff member must be CPR and First Aid certified. Coaches are provided an overview of first aid and best practices for any first aid situations.Each year, coaches go through a Mt Baldy approved Clinic, YCADA and JAMZ training to better their coaching skills.
